Many people believe UV is dangerous only during "peak hours" (10 AM to 4 PM) and safe otherwise.

The reality: UV is highest during peak hours, but it's not zero at other times. Early morning and late afternoon still produce meaningful UV exposure, particularly UVA. Winter days at mid-latitudes still produce daytime UV that adds up.

The "peak hours" guidance is useful for reducing exposure, not for eliminating it. Being outdoors at 5 PM in summer is not "safe from the sun."

The fix: consider any daytime outdoor time as sun exposure worth protecting against, weighting harder for peak hours but not treating off-peak as free.

Mistake 8: Assuming Sleeves = All Sleeves

Not all sleeves provide equal UV protection.

The reality:

  • Regular cotton t-shirt: 60-80% UV blocking (equivalent to about UPF 5-15)
  • White cotton, wet: sometimes below 40%
  • Loose-weave summer fabrics: often below 70%
  • Dark, tightly-woven regular fabrics: 90%+
  • UPF-rated fabrics: 93-98%+ depending on rating

Wearing a long-sleeve shirt doesn't automatically mean you're getting UPF 50 protection. A loose-weave cotton shirt in bright sun still lets through significant UV.

Mistake 9: Applying Sunscreen After You're Already Outside

Sunscreen needs about 15-30 minutes after application to bind to skin and become effective. Applying sunscreen in the parking lot, in the car, or after already starting an outdoor activity means you're unprotected during the initial exposure period.

The reality: you get significant UV exposure during the first 15-30 minutes of any outdoor time if you're applying sunscreen at the start of that time.

The fix: apply sunscreen at home before leaving. Or use protection formats (clothing, sleeves) that don't require pre-activation time.

Mistake 10: Forgetting the Back of Your Hands

Mistake 12: Winter and Cool Weather Complacency

Cooler weather feels less sunny, so many people relax their sun protection habits. This is a mistake for arm exposure specifically.

The reality: UVA levels drop less than UVB in winter. Bright winter days at mid-latitudes still produce meaningful UV exposure. Snow reflects up to 80% of UV, meaning skiers can get more UV than beachgoers.

The fix: maintain arm protection during outdoor activity in any season. Snow sports specifically warrant extra attention.

Most of these mistakes share a pattern: they involve trusting intuition or convenience over actual UV science. Fixing these mistakes doesn't require becoming a sun-protection fanatic. It requires:

1. Understanding which situations actually expose your arms to UV (all daytime outdoor time, driving, cloudy days, winter)

2. Choosing protection methods that actually work reliably in those situations (arm sleeves for driving, UPF clothing for extended outdoor time, sunscreen properly applied and reapplied for flexibility)

3. Building enough of a system that you're not deciding "should I protect today" every day, the protection is just there
